Before you begin to read about the home remedies, it would be worthwhile to briefly understand as to what causes the hair on the upper lip. In fact, this condition develops when a woman is affected by hirsutism.
Hirsutism is a condition where there is an abnormal increase in the amount of androgen, a male hormone, in the woman’s body. This leads to the growth of hair on various sites of the body including the upper lip. The risk of developing hirsutism is determined by the following factors:
  • Ethnicity: The racial background of a woman greatly determines the extent to which she is prone to the condition. It has been seen that hirsutism is more common among women of some regions in Asia and Africa than their counterparts in North America.
  • Genetics: A woman has a high chance of developing hirsutism when the condition runs in their family.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (POS): POS is a condition where cysts develop on the ovaries. When a woman gets affected by POS, along with other symptoms, she could also have hirsutism.
  • Cushing syndrome: This is one more disorder, the symptoms of which also include hirsutism. The syndrome leads to an alarming rise in the cortisol levels in the body.

Older Adults Should Engage in Household Work to Keep the Heart Healthy

Highlights
  • Patients should be encouraged to do everyday household chores
  • Simple household tasks can improve strength and balance
  • Many healthcare providers are focussed only on the medical treatments
Staying active can take you a long way to good health. It is not without reason that doctors tell us to engage in physical activities and lead an active lifestyle. It has various beneficial effects on our body, aiding day-to-day functions as well as keeping diseases at bay. Elders too should keep active to not fall prey to health problems. Even walking or carrying out household chores can work wonders. According to a recent study by University of Pittsburgh, engaging in daily activities like making bed, doing the laundry, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, dancing or walking can help immensely, even in their road to recovery from heart attack or other ailments.
According to researchers, a daily walk is proven to be beneficial, and tai chi, yoga and balance training can also help, but encouraging patients to do more chores around the house is the simplest way to get people moving. The study published by the American Heart Association said patients should be encouraged to do everyday household chores instead of simply given medication.

The document said simple household tasks can improve strength and balance and reduce frailty - particularly among elderly patients. The study, published in the Circulation medical journal, suggests exercise training is still a daunting challenge for the majority of older patients with cardiovascular disease, reports Mail Online.
"Encouragement to make a bed, carry laundry, climb stairs, dance, or walk as part of a daily routine may better achieve healthful physically active behaviour in many older adults," the researchers stated.

Dr. Daniel Forman, a geriatric cardiologist and chair of the American Heart Association, said doctors are too focused on using drugs and instead should prioritise exercise.

"Many healthcare providers are focussed only on the medical management of diseases, such as heart failure, heart attacks, valvular heart disease and strokes, without directly focusing on helping patients maximize their physical function," he said.

Dr Forman of the University of Pittsburgh added, "Emphasising physical function as a fundamental part of therapy can improve older patients' quality of life and their ability to carry out activities of daily living."

"By the time they're 75, about half of cardiac patients are taking more than 10 medications, and they can have cumulative effects that are uncertain and which can be debilitating," Forman concluded.

Lessen Your Salt Intake to Get Good Night's Sleep

Highlights
  • Nocturia or peeing at night affects most people over the age of 60
  • Lack of sleep can lead to several problems such as stress, irritability
  • Reducing salt in one's diet can significantly reduce excessive peeing
Love sprinkling salt into your bowl of salad, curries, stir-fries and snacks? While salt instantly adds flavour to the dishes, excessive amount of it could also put you at health risk. According to a report by World Health Organisation (WHO), Indians consume excessive amounts of salt in their food, much beyond the permissible limit. It is no doubt a necessary ingredient in cooking, but there needs to be some sort of discipline while using it. Like they say, too much of something is not good for health. Moderation should always be followed. Most processed food items, snacks, street foods, and even restaurant food contain excessive slat levels, regular consumption of which can put one at serious health consequences.
Did you know that having too much salt could also be hampering you for getting a good night's sleep? According to a research study done by Nagasaki University in Japan, cutting down on salt can help you get good sleep by reducing the number of trips to the toilet.

The need to pee at night or nocturia affects most people over the age of 60. Although it seems a simple problem, the lack of sleep can lead to other problems such as stress, irritability or tiredness, and so can have a significant negative impact on quality of life. The new study presented at the European Society of Urology congress in London suggests that a slight dietary tweak can help tackle the problem.

Reducing the amount of salt in one's diet can significantly reduce excessive peeing, both during the day and when asleep, the study said.
"Night-time urination is a real problem for many people, especially as they get older. This work holds out the possibility that a simple dietary modification might significantly improve the quality of life for many people," said lead researcher Matsuo Tomohiro from Nagasaki University in Japan.

The researchers studied a group of 321 men and women who had a high salt intake and had problems sleeping. The patients were given guidance and support to reduce salt consumption. They were followed for 12 weeks, and salt consumption measured biochemically. As a result of the intervention, 223 members of the group were able to reduce their salt intake from 10.7 gm per day to 8.0 gm per day. In this group, the average night-time frequency of urination dropped from 2.3 times per night to 1.4 times.

In contrast, 98 per cent increased their average salt intake from 9.6 gm per night to 11.0 gm per night, and they found that the need to urinate increased from 2.3 times per night to 2.7 times per night. The researchers also found that daytime urination was reduced when salt in the diet was reduced.

"This is the first study to measure how salt intake affects the frequency of going to the bathroom, so we need to confirm the work with larger studies," said Tomohiro.

What Meditation Did For Me – and Can For You Too

By Dan Harris
You may have heard all the fuss about meditation -- the health benefits, the celebrities who are doing it, etc. But, if you're anything like me, you probably have some serious reservations. You might be under the impression that meditation is only for hippies, acid freaks, and robed gurus. You might believe you could never do it because you can't “clear the mind.” Or maybe you've written it off because you believe you simply don't have the time.
Allow me to systematically dismantle each of these assumptions, and then show you, in the simplest possible terms, how to meditate -- and what you’ll get out of it.
Quick backstory: If you had told me a few years ago that I would ever become a public evangelist for meditation, I would have coughed my beer up through my nose.

OK, so let's tackle the most popular excuses for not meditating.
I am a fidgety, skeptical anchorman for ABC News. In 2004, I had a panic attack on national television. Through a weird and winding series of events, that freak-out eventually led me to meditation, something I’d always considered ridiculous. While the practice has by no means solved all of my problems -- I'm still shorter than I want to be, and would love to have more hair -- it has been a genuine game changer. Which is why I wrote a whole book about it -- and even started a new app to teach it -- both called “10% Happier.” (That’s an entirely unscientific estimate, but it’s, you know, close enough.)

'It's Only for Flakes'

Contrary to popular belief, meditation does not involve joining a group, adopting exotic new beliefs, wearing special outfits, or sitting in a funny position.
That's one of our cats, Ruby. (My wife, who took the picture, does not like when I point out that this cat is basking in the reflective glow of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.”)
There are thousands of kinds of meditation, but I am proponent of what's called “mindfulness meditation.” It's derived from Buddhism, but has been stripped of all the metaphysical claims and religious lingo. It is the kind of meditation that has been studied the most in the labs. (See more about this below.)

'I Can't Clear My Mind'

I hear this all the time. People tell me, “I know meditation is good for you, but you don’t understand -- my mind is too busy.” I call this, “The Fallacy of Uniqueness.” The good news and the bad news is: You’re not special. Welcome to the human condition. All of our minds are chaotic.
But here’s the real headline: Meditation does not require you to stop thinking.
I suspect this misconception is a result of the traditional imagery of meditation -- which shows people with beatific looks on their faces, floating off into the cosmos. For example, this cover shot for Time

Sadly, you are unlikely to look or feel this way – especially as a beginning meditator.
I think this is a better way to think about the practice:
I won’t lie: It kinda sucks, especially at first. It’s not unlike going to the gym. If you work out and you're not panting or sweating, you’re probably cheating. Likewise, if you start meditating and find yourself in a thought -- free bliss field, you’ve either rocketed to enlightenment -- or you’re dead.

'I Don't Have Time'

Yes, you do. I don’t care if you have 17 jobs and 25 kids, you’ve got 5 to 10 minutes a day. That’s what I started with -- and that’s what I recommend everyone set as their initial goal. I suspect if you did 5 to 10 minutes a day forever, you would derive most of the advertised benefits.

Speaking of Which… What Do I Get Out of It?

In recent years, there’s been an explosion of scientific research into meditation. While this science is still in its early stages, it strongly suggests a long list of tantalizing health benefits, including:
  • Lowering your blood pressure
  • Boosting your immune system
  • Reducing the release of stress hormones
  • Helping lower anxiety, depression, ADHD, and age-related cognitive decline
  • cientists are now peering directly into the brains of meditators, and finding that when you meditate, it physically changes your brain.
This is true not just for people who wear robes. One study of novice meditators found that after only 8 weeks of short, daily doses of meditation, the gray matter in the parts of the brain associated with self-awareness and compassion literally grew. And the gray matter in the part of the brain associated with stress shrank.
  • How Soon Will I See Results?

For me, the first sign that meditation wasn't a waste of time came within weeks, when I started to overhear my wife at cocktail parties, telling friends that I had become less obnoxious.
Inside my own mind, I pretty quickly began to notice two primary benefits. The first: improved focus. The daily exercise of trying to focus on one thing at a time -- my breath -- and then getting lost and starting again (and again, and again) helped me stay on task during the course of my day.
But the bigger benefit was something called mindfulness. It a boring sounding word, but a phenomenally useful skill. Mindfulness is the ability to see what's happening in your mind at any given moment without getting carried away by it.
One way to think about this is by picturing the mind as a waterfall.
The reason this looks like crap is that I drew it, but bear with me.
The water represents your nonstop stream of consciousness -- mostly "me, me, me" thoughts. Mindfulness is the area behind the waterfall, which allows you to step out of the traffic, and view your urges, impulses, and desires without necessarily biting the hook and acting on them.
Imagine how practical this is. Mindfulness can make you the calmest person in the room during a stressful meeting. It can stop you from eating the 18th cookie, or making the wisecrack that will ruin the next 48 hours of your marriage.

Women's Health Tips for Heart, Mind, and Body By Kara Mayer Robinson

Looking for the path toward a healthier you? It's not hard to find. The journey begins with some simple tweaks to your lifestyle. The right diet, exercise, and stress-relief plan all play a big role.

Follow a Heart-Healthy Diet

There's an easy recipe if your goal is to keep away problems like heart disease and strokes.
  • Eat more fruits and veggies.
  • Choose whole grains. Try brown rice instead of white. Switch to whole wheat pasta.
  • Choose lean proteins like poultry, fish, beans, and legumes.
  • Cut down on processed foods, sugar, salt, and saturated fat.
When eating healthy, flexibility often works best, says Joyce Meng, MD, assistant professor at the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center at UConn Health. If you like to follow a strict diet plan, go for it. If not, it's OK. "Find what works for you."
Tricia Montgomery, 52, the founder of K9 Fit Club, knows first-hand how the right diet and lifestyle can help. For her, choosing healthy foods and planning small, frequent meals works well. "I don't deny myself anything," she says. "I still have dessert -- key lime pie, yum! -- and I love frozen gummy bears, but moderation is key."

Exercise Every Day

The more active you are, the better, Meng says. Exercise boosts your heart health, builds muscle and bone strength, and wards off health problems.
Aim for 2 and a half hours of moderate activity, like brisk walking or dancing, every week. If you're OK with vigorous exercise, stick to 1 hour and 15 minutes a week of things like running or playing tennis. Add a couple of days of strength training, too.
If you're busy, try short bursts of activity throughout the day. Walk often. A good target is 10,000 steps a day. Take the stairs. Park your car far away from your destination.
Montgomery exercises every day, often with her dog. By adding lunges, squats, and stairs to a walk, she turns it into a power workout. "I also am a huge Pilates fan," she says.

Lose Weight

When you shed pounds you'll lower your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.

Aim for a slow, steady drop. Try to lose 1-2 pounds a week by being active and eating better.
"It doesn't have to be an hour of intense exercise every day," Meng says. "Any little bit helps."
As you improve, dial up the time and how hard you work out. If you want to lose a lot of weight, try for 300 minutes of exercise a week.
"Eating a healthy diet will go a long way," Meng says. Start by cutting sugar, which she says is often hiding in plain sight -- in store-bought items like salad dressing, packaged bread, and nuts. Try to avoid soda and sugar-laced coffee drinks, too.

Visit Your Doctor

Get regular checkups. Your doctor keeps track of your medical history and can help you stay healthy. For example, if you're at risk for osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones, he may want you to get more calcium and vitamin D.
Your doctor may recommend screening tests to keep an eye on your health and catch conditions early when they're easier to treat.
Keep the lines of communication open. "If you have questions, ask your doctor," Meng says. "Make sure you understand things to your satisfaction." If you're worried about a medication or procedure, talk to him about it.

Cut Down Your stress

It can take a toll on your health. You probably can't avoid it altogether, but you can find ways to ease the impact. Don't take on too much. Try to set limits with yourself and others. It's OK to say no.
To relieve stress, try:
  • Deep breathing
  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Massage
  • Exercise
  • Healthy eating
  • Talking to a friend, family member, or professional counselor

Create Healthy Habits

If you make the right choices today, you can ward off problems tomorrow.
  • Brush your teeth twice a day and floss every day.
  • Don't smoke.
  • Limit your alcohol. Keep it to one drink a day.
  • If you have medication, take it exactly how your doctor prescribed it.
  • Improve your sleep. Aim for 8 hours. If you have trouble getting shut-eye, talk to your doctor.
  • Use sunscreen and stay out of the sun from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Wear your seatbelt.
Take time every day to invest in your health, Meng says.
It paid off for Montgomery. She says she overcame health problems, feels good, and has a positive outlook. "My life," she says, "is forever changed."
